The high-energy gases pass through turbine stages, causing the turbine to rotate.

Part of this mechanical energy is transferred through shafts to drive the compressor and other rotating components.

5. Thrust

Finally, the accelerated airflow produces thrust.

In a turbofan engine, both the engine core and the large bypass airflow contribute to the overall propulsion system.

This continuous cycle—intake, compression, combustion, turbine, and exhaust—is one of the most fascinating examples of mechanical and thermodynamic engineering working together.

Look at a modern commercial aircraft and there is a good chance you will see large turbofan engines mounted beneath its wings.

Unlike early turbojet engines, turbofans are designed to move a large amount of air efficiently.
