2. Work description:
The USS New Jersey was a battleship belonging to the United States Navy and was the second ship of the Iowa-class battleships. This ship was the second US naval vessel named after the state of New Jersey.
During World War II, the New Jersey bombarded military targets in Guam and Okinawa and escorted aircraft carriers on their attack on the Marshall Islands. During the Korean War, the ship participated in the attack operations along the coast of North Korea. Afterward, it was retired and incorporated into the US Navy Reserve Fleet, commonly known as the "mothballed fleet". In 1968, the ship briefly re-entered service to support the US forces in Vietnam, and was then mothballed again the following year. By the 1980s, to support the "Six Hundred Fleet" plan, the New Jersey underwent modernization and missileization modifications and was re-commissioned. In 1983, the ship participated in the US intervention in the Lebanese civil war.
The New Jersey was finally decommissioned in 1991, having served in the active fleet for 21 years. During its service career, it received commendations from naval units for its performance in the Vietnam War and received 19 battle star medals for participating in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Lebanese civil war, and the Persian Gulf military operations. After a brief stay in the mothballed fleet, the ship was donated to the Port Authority of New Jersey in Camden, New Jersey, and has has been open to the public as a museum ship since October 15, 2001.
