History:

Titanic was a British royal liner and one of the three Olympic-class ships of the White Star Line, and at the time of her service was the world's largest ship at sea, built by the Belfast shipyard of Harland & Wolff, and known as the "Never Sinking". Titanic was equipped with three main engines - two reciprocating four-cylinder triple-expansion steam engines and one low-pressure steam turbine engine, each driving a propeller. the two reciprocating engines produced a total of 30,000 bhp, while the turbine engine produced 16,000 bhp. White Star Line used the same engine combination on the early passenger ship Laurentique with great success. It offers the perfect combination of performance and speed; the reciprocating engine on its own is not powerful enough to propel an Olympic-class ship at the required speed, while the steam turbine engine, while powerful enough, causes uncomfortable vibrations for passengers, a problem encountered by Crown Tat's all-turbine passenger ships, the Lusitania and the Mauretania. By combining reciprocating engines with steam turbine engines, White Star Line was able to reduce fuel usage and increase power while creating the same amount of steam.

Powered by steam generated by 29 boilers, it contains a total of 159 coal-fired furnaces. The boilers are 4.8 meters in diameter, 6.1 meters long and three stories high. Each boiler weighs 92.97 tonnes and can hold 49.28 tonnes of water.
The burning coal heats the boiler to produce steam, and 6,717 metric tons of coal are stored in the coal bunker.

Design:

The excess steam from the reciprocating engines is then fed to the steam turbine engines located at the stern, where the vapour passes through a face condenser to increase the efficiency of the turbines, and the steam can be condensed back into the water for reuse. The power generated by these engines is output directly on the propeller drive shafts; there are three propellers, one driven by each engine; the port and starboard flank propellers are the largest, each carrying three manganese-copper alloy blades with a diameter of 7.01 meters. The centre propeller, on the other hand, carried 3 manganese-copper alloy blades (unlike the Olympic, which had 4 blades, and is often confused by many) and was 5.18 meters in diameter, but it could not be reversed. The Titanic was fitted with power generation equipment that produced more electricity in the same amount of time than the average urban power plant of the time. Immediately behind the steam turbine engines were four 400,000 watt steam-driven generators to power the ship, and two 30,000 watt auxiliary generators for emergencies[101] which were located at the stern of the ship and were still running to supply power in the last few minutes before Titanic's sinking
